In this guest blog post, the founder and CEO of VEEP (the Visual Eating and Exercise Program), Joel Greene, discusses a non-time-intensive way to get lean and live longer: rebalancing the kinds of bacteria in your gut. VEEP is now available at all YMCA of Metro Chicago membership centers, either as a standalone program or a free addition to our Y MaxTraining System® and Advanced Y MaxTraining System® options. Throughout the month of April, the Y is also hosting a series of free VEEP webinars (see the bottom of this post). To view this week's webinar, click here. Here's Joel Greene:

In the last few years, new science has revealed a rather amazing discovery: the leanest and longest-lived people in the world all have very similar species of bacteria in their gut. On the flip side, overweight and obese individuals also seem to have very similar gut bacteria profiles, also known as enterotypes.

This new discovery introduces a powerful new possibility: if you change the bacteria in our gut to match the enterotypes found in lean and long-lived people, you can exert powerful control over your bodies in a non-time intensive way.

In fact, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing in the VEEP System since 2009, before the general nutrition and medical community realized the power of recolonizing the gut bacteria. It’s an essential life skill that we teach as part of the program.

Here are just a few of the recent discoveries we now know to be true about the symbiotic relationship between the communities of bacteria in our gut and our overall health.

Learning to balance the bacteria communities in the gut in favor of the “good” bacteria species is the foundational cornerstone to optimizing your body.
