On January 23, the Foglia YMCA of Metro Chicago celebrated the completion of a 9,000-square-foot expansion, which nearly doubles the size of the gymnasium and enables the YMCA to offer new programming for individuals and families in the community. The project was made possible through the generous contributions of philanthropists Vince and Pat Foglia, civic leaders and community members. "

On Friday, January 23, the Foglia YMCA of Metro Chicago celebrated the completion of a 9,000-square-foot expansion, which nearly doubles the size of the gymnasium and enables the YMCA to offer new programming for individuals and families in the community.
"I've lived in the area for over 20 years now. My family has grown up here, and my kids learned to swim at the Y. It's been a great asset to the community," said  Steve Sorenson, Chair of the Foglia YMCA Board of Directors. "A couple of years ago, it started to occur to us that the demand in the community was greater than than the supply of space that we had. We decided we wanted to change that and the result is what you see here."
Foglia YMCA now boasts two gymnasiums, a climbing wall, high ropes course, new basketball court and two new multi-purpose classrooms. The new gymnasium opened a few weeks before, just in time for the inclement weather that led to school closings across Metropolitan Chicago. "We had the opportunity to open up our gym to all those kids who had nowhere to go because the schools were closed. We had over 200 kids in here and we were able to mobilize an entire school program," said Tony Janca, Executive Director of the Foglia YMCA.
Foglia YMCA serves more than 4,000 members and distributes over $240,000 in financial assistance, which allows children and adults to participate in programs they otherwise could not afford.
"We pride ourselves on working with children and families. We don't turn anyone away because of financial need and I think that differentiates us from others. I can't think of another YMCA that does a better job of serving the community other than the Foglia YMCA," said Richard Malone, President and CEO, YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. "We thank all the members of the Foglia YMCA Board because I know it's not easy and it takes years to turn a place like this into what it is today."
The expansion was made possible through the generous contributions of philanthropists Vince and Pat Foglia, civic leaders and community members. Vince Foglia said, "I'm so pleased to have my name on this place. I'm excited for this expansion. My grandkids use this place. We got exactly what we wanted, maybe even a little bit more because it lives on because so many people support it. It's just gorgeous, and we'll have a lot more kids that we can serve."
Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton added, "This YMCA has enhanced the lives of thousands of children and families in Lake Zurich, Hawthorne Woods, Kildeer, Barrington and the surrounding communities for the past 15 years. It has truly become a community anchor where neighbors gather, connect and stay healthy together."
