There are lots of fun ways to stay cool and relaxed in Chicago, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer 7 essential tips for preventing heat-related illnesses in your family when the temperature reaches dangerous levels.

  1. Wear the right kind of summer clothing, staying away from tight and dark-colored items.
  2. Try to stay indoors, using fans or air-conditioners to stay cool.
  3. Schedule outdoor activities for later in the day when outside temperatures are lower.
  4. Don’t push yourself too hard throughout the day.
  5. Put on plenty of sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher.
  6. Never leave your children or pets alone in a closed car.
