We're thankful for a lot of things at the Y — but as much as we love Thanksgiving, it's one of the most difficult times of year to stay committed to your health. According to Beverly Keeler at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, the average Thanksgiving dinner is 1,865 calories. That's more than many adults should eat in an entire day!
In an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Keeler offered the following 8 tips for a healthier Thanksgiving Day:
Keep your breakfast and lunch small and high in fiber — but don't starve yourself, because then you'll overeat at dinner.
Limit the amount of alcohol you drink. Some studies have linked alcohol consumption to increased appetite, not to mention the extra carbs.
Go for a walk! Before or after dinner is fine.
Keep your portions small.
Only eat the foods you love.
Make a leftovers plan. Send your guests away with some food so you're not left alone with too much temptation.
Don't give in to peer pressure. If someone makes fun of you for eating healthy, just change the subject.
Don't be too hard on yourself. If you splurge at Thanksgiving dinner, just make sure you don't keep eating that way for days afterward.
